About me

Hi there, I'm James, or Jim, welcome to my site! When I was thinking about what to write about me, what I kept coming back to was my passion for learning and education. Whilst I am quite proud of my achievements over the past 5 or so years, I haven’t always been a great student. So much so, that I was rejected from all of my university preferences and luckily scraped into an undergraduate degree with a third-round offer. However, I’ve always been incredibly curious. When I decided to grow up, apply myself, and decide upon a career, I reflected on my skills and what I have enjoyed. Something that always featured was my love of discovery and learning, and ability to teach.

Since then, I have developed myself immensely. From working in various biomedical industry roles, to returning to study a Master of Biomedical Science and learning research methodologies, to developing statistical models for the diagnosis of MND, to my current pursuit of becoming a Doctor, I have developed a lot of skills. Basic sciences, physiology, statistics, maths, the list goes on.

Something I attribute my ability to learn information to is building a conceptual understanding. I find too often that in the current educational system, there is such a focus on small details, which ends up overwhelming for students. I pride myself on explaining concepts simply and scaffolding learning. The number of times I have heard “I don’t know why my teacher didn’t explain it like that” or “that makes so much more sense” is something that I am very proud of.

I hope to inspire students and help them achieve their best. Seeing the improvement and hearing positive comments about the effect my tutoring has is incredibly rewarding and something I want to do long into the future.
