Learn problem solving frameworks to smash S3 and start your medical journey today.

Studying a lot but not seeing improvement?

Many students struggle with what to study and default to studying scientific theory through resources like Khan Academy. Whilst these are great resources for their purpose, it is completely different to the GAMSAT, which requires deep problem solving ability and a complicated application of simple skills. You cannot learn this in a textbook. Through my tutoring I help students study relevant content and develop their problem solving abilities. Studying for the GAMSAT doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

What Do My Sessions Involve?

Skills Sessions

are usually half teaching, where we go through a set of skills and good processes to follow, followed by an application of the skills we learnt in the GAMSAT context, so you can see how you might use what we have covered. Skills I consider essential are: maths and rearranging equations, naming molecules, rotating molecules, genetics, and isomers.

Framework Sessions

Typically more focussed on developing an ability to identify questions which utilise the same skills or problem solving approaches as another (which may not immediately appear to be related!) to form generalised frameworks to common question types, such as: organic reactions, logarithms, stereochemistry, acids and bases, unit conversion, and more.

Question Sessions

In these sessions we either go through questions you have attempted but struggled or go through entirely new questions. Depending on your needs, we will either be honing those problem solving approaches, skills, and frameworks by reviewing questions or developing your speed, timing, and exam strategy on new material.

About me

Hey there, my name is James (or Jim - whichever you prefer). I’m a second year medical student and creator of Jim’s Tutoring. Here are some details to help you learn a bit about me:

• Scored 70 overall (65, 60, 77)

• 11 years of tutoring experience

• Passionate teacher

• B. Science and M. Biomed degrees

• Owner of a really cute dog who might interrupt our sessions

Real results

March 2024 cohort statistics:

• Average score of 64 (~78th percentile)

56% of students above 61 (~66th percentile)

22% of students above 65 (~81st percentile)

• Average improvement of 8 points

• Average of 7 sessions

FAQs

  • I not only did well enough on the GAMSAT and MMIs to get admission, but I am a passionate educator. I have tutored for over a decade and love it. I know what you need to learn and will go above and beyond to help you succeed.

  • Generally in trial sessions we discuss how lessons are structured, content we will cover, study plans to optimise your time outside of sessions, and also any questions you may have. Students find these incredibly helpful to decide if I’m the right fit for them!

  • Essential skills are maths skills such as index laws, logarithms, scientific notation, and unit conversion; chemistry skills, like stereochemistry, naming functional groups, acids & bases, and electronegativity; and graph interpretation. Without an understanding of these areas, the exam will be very hard!

  • Like any skill, practice makes perfect. I constantly reflect on my own tutoring and am always improving on how I can distill my thought process to my students. I have many different simple mechanisms you can use to breakdown problems. Anecdotally from my students, this is something they have not found any other tutors are able to do.

  • Absolutely! This is something we start from day one as I believe reflecting on your mistakes and having clear goals for what you are studying and why is so important. There is so much information about what to study it can very easily become overwhelming. Some students find this so beneficial they book sessions simply to organise their study routine and discuss how to improve their reflective processes.

  • “Theory” refers to studying science in the traditional sense. For example, following a university chemistry syllabus. This is not helpful!

S3 is not a science exam, it is a problem solving exam with questions loosely based in science. There is a massive difference.

The concepts you need to understand are actually incredibly simple, however the application of this concept is the difficult part. I will teach you the concepts to the level you need to understand them, but most importantly, will show you how to apply these skills in the GAMSAT.

  • Generally, I focus my sessions on a common concept in the GAMSAT and help build those skills. I really like drawing, so usually screen share my iPad and draw out everything you need to understand.

Then, I go to practice questions (generally ACER as I think these are the highest quality questions) which require this concept we have learnt.

It is important to build the skills, but also to see how you will need to use them in the exam.

  • In my opinion, the best by far are the ACER resources. I think people who say these are outdated do not understand what the exam is actually assessing.

If you look at each question as a skill that you will need, you start to see similarities in how these skills present.
