Make Science Interesting

Online tutoring which has helped dozens of students find their love of science

Science is not boring

As someone who loves science, a little part of me dies when they say it is boring. It isn’t!

Also an understanding of science really develops skills in problem solving and critical thinking which are such important in life after school, whether you go to university or not.

And if you do want to go to uni, science subjects also form the pre-requisites for many courses - especially Biology and Chemistry.

I am proud of the fact that my tutoring inspires students to actually enjoy science, learning, and school in general. Every person has the fascination and curiosity to love science, I just help my students explore it.

My Tutoring Style

Creating a fun environment

This doesn’t mean having fun, but it is so important to start breaking the association of science being boring, difficult, and unejoyable. The learning environment is everything, and changing the mindset towards science often has very beneficial effects.

Simplifying important concepts

Some topics are simply more important than others. It can often be very overwhelming when there seems like there is so much to learn. By focussing on the important concepts, we not only overcome this, but develop a deeper understand of these topics.

Being patient and encouraging

Feeling that you are not good at maths can be really demoralising and make students anxious about engaging with the content at all. I am naturally warm and make students feel comfortable to ask questions and attempt problems - the most important aspects of learning.

Subjects Offered

Year 7-10

These years are really just about building the fundamental skills, understanding, and interest in science. I make learning these years fun and engaging to get the most out of my students and develop the skills they need for further studies.

VCE Biology

Biology is all about understanding the core concept really well, but not all concepts were created equal. With my background I know the most important concepts to help keep your study focussed and effective.

VCE Chemistry

Chemistry is very challenging as it requires a conceptual understanding of things you cannot see. Like all science, we will start small and build up. You’ll be working out the amount of limiting reagent or R/S configuration in no time.

FAQs

  • I have tutored for over a decade and absolutely love education. I can recognise specific learning needs and adapt my style accordingly.

I care about my students and go above and beyond to help them succeed.

  • Generally in trial sessions we discuss how lessons are structured, content we will cover, study plans to optimise your time outside of sessions, and also any questions you may have. Students find these incredibly helpful to decide if I’m the right fit for them!

  • I think it is best to use what your school is using as ultimately, this is what you will be assessed on. For VCE or interstate equivalent, I focus all of our sessions on the Unit Outlines for that state to make sure we are targeting the most important concepts.

  • Honestly, not much else other than yourself, but bringing resources specific to your school and examples of questions you have found difficult will help target our sessions better.

  • Interaction is the most important thing, so I always have a collaborative whiteboard which we can both work on. Science is very graphical, so it is important we can draw pathways and reactions, etc.

  • I have been tutoring for a long time and I think that the average online tutoring is actually better than in-person, not worse. The student feels more comfortable, it is more convenient, and is equally engaging.

Of course there are exceptions, but this is my experience having done both.
